TAMPA, Fla. — Drivers will no longer be able to travel on interstate shoulders, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The agency says emergency shoulder use was discontinued Wednesday. That means they are only to be used for emergency stopping and drivers should not be inside or outside emergency lanes.

Emergency Shoulder Use was authorized earlier this week to help traffic flow during evacuation periods ahead of Hurricane Milton.

ESU was first implemented in September 2017 for Hurricane Irma and has since been used for Hurricane Ian in September 2022. Benefits to ESU include fewer resources required, shorter notice required for implementation, lack of disruption to local roadways, and a lack of impact on opposing traffic flow.
