Deadly crash involving pedestrian temporarily shuts down part of S. Howard Avenue

The driver was exiting a shopping plaza when he hit the pedestrian.

TAMPA, Fla. — A man is dead after he was hit by a pickup truck driver, Tampa police say. The resulting investigation temporarily shut down part of S. Howard Avenue Tuesday morning.

The crash reportedly happened around 2:46 a.m. at the intersection of S. Howard Avenue and W. Horatio Street.

The driver of a 2013 Chevy HD 2500 pickup truck, a 27-year-old man, was leaving a shopping plaza located at the intersection. As he was exiting the plaza, he reportedly hit a 35-year-old man.

According to police, the driver didn't come to a complete stop before entering the roadway. When the crash happened, police say the pedestrian was standing near the roadway's edge.

After getting hit by the truck driver, the 35-year-old man was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital where he died.

The driver stayed at the crash site.

"This remains an active investigation," police said in a release. "Any applicable charges will be determined as the investigation progresses."

The crash also resulted in both directions of Howard Avenue to shut down temporarily at the Horatio Street intersection. It has since reopened.
