Growth and development in Kathleen: A community in transition

Local leaders are paving the way for new development in Kathleen.

KATHLEEN, Fla. — As Polk County continues to be one of the fastest-growing counties in Florida, the small town of Kathleen is experiencing significant changes. This growth, while promising, brings both challenges and opportunities for local residents.

One of the challenges for some is the five-month closure of Kathleen Road. Leaders we spoke to say the closure is part of a larger plan to pave the way for a new development, including the addition of nearly 650 single-family homes.

Jay Jarvis, Roads and Drainage Director, explained the necessity of the closure. Workers are adding turn lanes, stormwater ponds, and improving drainage through the area.

"We get a few calls about people, the inconvenience, basically what it is as far as what's happening on Kathleen Road and such a long term five months of a road closure and stuff like that and diverting people around," Jarvis said.

Other infrastructure improvements are also underway, such as the development of multiple intersections and sidewalk projects.

Jarvis noted, "There's multiple intersections being looked at. We have a roundabout that's being worked on and sidewalk projects, 1st Avenue, over on the west side of Kathleen is being worked on as well."

Despite the inconvenience, some residents are optimistic about the changes.

Ashley Rodriguez, a Kathleen High School alumna, shared her positive outlook, "I mean the growth is great. It's positive. I mean, growth is everything in the world. The more you grow, the better opportunities you have."

While acknowledging the traffic delays, she emphasized that the improvements would lead to fewer potholes and smoother roads.

Kathleen, known for its rural charm, is undergoing a transformation that reflects its position in a rapidly growing county.

John Bohde, Planning and Development Director, highlighted the long-term investments in the area.

"We've spent tens of millions of dollars in that area over the last 15, 20 years," Bohde said. "That includes infrastructure and other things like building a new fire station, and widening Kathleen Road.”

Bohde said it's all part of the growth process that local leaders have prepared for. He says utility improvements are part of that process as well.

The closed portion of Kathleen Road is set to open in October, and the new development is expected to bring fresh opportunities to the area.

Local leaders are hopeful that these efforts will help Kathleen continue to thrive, blending its historical heritage with modern growth.
