Bartow’s Boom: A city on the rise

In this week’s community connection, we highlight the city of Bartow and its projected growth.

BARTOW, Fla. — Located in the heart of Polk County, the city of Bartow is experiencing a significant population increase.

According to U.S. Census data, Bartow, a town with a population of less than 20,000, is on the cusp of doubling its residents within the next few years. This surge is attributed to the city’s affordability and quality of life, making it an attractive destination for those seeking a more balanced lifestyle. It’s why Bartow is attracting new businesses and a younger demographic, including young professionals and families.

Bartow’s landscape makes it ripe for development.

"Where we have growth occurring right now along the US 98 corridor, going north on both sides of the roadway, east and west, we have street crossing, which is residential, multifamily and commercial. The roadway system is already there to support it,” said Bartow City Manager Mike Herr.

The city's growth brings numerous opportunities, from road improvements to new housing developments and job creation. New companies are setting up in Bartow, bolstering the local economy.

“Residential growth supports local business. We're trying to grow the economy here in Bartow, in the south part of our county. I believe it brings more opportunities than challenges,” Herr said.

City Commissioner Laura Simpson echoed this sentiment, noting that new businesses find it beneficial to operate in Bartow.

“Businesses are relocating and investing in our community. Jobs are coming here, along with the residences,” she said.

U.S. Census data shows that Bartow and the greater Polk County area are growing due to their affordability and proximity to Florida’s major attractions. However, this rapid growth requires ongoing construction and infrastructure improvements.

With school out for the summer, city leaders are seizing the opportunity to tackle necessary projects. As a Bartow native, Commissioner Simpson values community feedback.

“We’re having conversations, communicating through social media, and scheduling public meetings to get input and keep residents informed,” she said.

City Manager Herr emphasized the importance of retaining and attracting the younger population.

“We want to work on keeping the younger population here. We want them to come back and create businesses because, without a legacy in mind, you don’t have a future,” he said.

Polk County is the fastest-growing county in Florida, and Bartow's leaders are preparing for the benefits and challenges this brings. The city’s budget prioritizes improving infrastructure, enhancing services and fostering community engagement. These efforts aim to manage the growth effectively and ensure Bartow remains a vibrant and thriving community.
