Clearwater scene linked to missing woman

The Pinellas sheriff is searching near a Clearwater home
Rene Cable

Clearwater, Florida -- 10 News cameras capture a glimpse of a lurid scene. Forensics agents digging on the side of a home.

What are they looking for?

Maybe 41-year-old Rene Cable, who went missing from the home more than a year ago.

"Detectives came by all of our houses asking for information about the missing woman," said a neighbor.

Neighbors say no one knew her, but they all had dubious comments about the owner of the house, 63-year-old Jerry Gaston, a certified building contractor who owns a bail bonds firm, firearms instruction business, construction company and an investigation agency.

Cable moved in with Gaston, who said she moved out to live with family, according to the sheriff's office.

What detectives told one neighbor was chilling.

"They just said you might want not want to answer the door if he's around. They said I looked very similar to the person who is missing," said a neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous.

The sheriff's office asked for the public's help to find Cable in January 2014. Roberta Rene Cable, who goes by "Rene" had been missing since Dec. 14, 2013. She went missing after leaving her home in Clearwater and has not had contact with friends or family. Cable was supposed to begin a new job on Dec. 16, 2013, and never showed up.

This day, forensics agents bring in ground penetrating radar, and plots of the property are covered with tarps.

We reached Cable's sister, Heather Obenland, by phone.

"I idolized her. Every move that she made, everything that she did I wanted to be just like her," said Obenland.

"She understood me better than anybody will ever understand me and it's going to suck not, you know, if this now comes to an end and there's no hope left ... and I may never talk to her ever again. There's always been that little bit of hope," she said.
