Clearwater Marine Aquarium reopens Friday with new light show

The aquarium was closed for 20 days and they say visitors will help support CMA’s efforts to recover from the impact of Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — It's time to flap your fins for joy because the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) is opening back up after closing during Hurricane Milton.

"Thanks to its dedicated staff and ride-out team, the resident animals are safe, and repairs to equipment are advancing," a release from the aquarium said.

The aquarium is reopening in a big way on Friday night. They will unveil a special exhibit — Aqua Lanterns: A Chinese Festival of Lights.

CMA will also reopen again on Oct. 21 to daily visitors between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The aquarium was closed for 20 days due to both Milton and Hurricane Helene. Officials say visitors will help support CMA’s efforts to recover from the impacts of both storms.

"See this creative exhibit that features lighted marine life sculptures throughout the aquarium," the release said.

After the sunset, the aquarium "transforms into a glowing seascape, featuring stunning illuminated sculptures up to 13 feet tall of whales, turtles, dolphins, sharks as well as penguins, jellyfish and other sparkling sea creatures."

You'll be able to walk through an illuminated marine world and discover over 30 beautifully-crafted lantern displays, next to the real animals throughout the aquarium.

On Friday, the "luminous new after-hours experience" begins from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. After opening night, it will open Thursday through Sunday evenings and select dates during the holiday season through the end of December.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the event is for all ages.

According to the release, tickets were slated to be $55 per person, but a special price of $45 will be offered to guests for admission throughout the weekend until Oct. 20.

All CMA members get 10% off tickets and save on special events all year.
