Clam Bayou neighbors hope for flood relief ahead of St. Pete community feedback session

In less than two years, one homeowner says she’s spent thousands paying to replace flood-damaged property.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — We all know the saying “When it rains, it pours,” but for neighbors near Clam Bayou that quip hits a little closer to home.

In less than two years, one homeowner tells me she’s spent thousands paying to replace flood-damaged property.

On a nice day, the outside of Devynn Maurer's home is an eclectic oasis but if the area gets some Florida rain...

“This whole canal is getting backed up,” Maurer said.

She says rainwater floods right onto her property, often causing a foot-and-a-half of water to sit at her doorstep on any given stormy day.

Maurer has only lived near the bayou for 18 months and says she has already had to replace her floors because of the flooding.

“The whole house got replaced because it flooded so bad and that wasn’t during the hurricane,” she said.

Now, Maurer is calling on city leaders to find some way to help protect not only her property but her neighbors as well.

"It gets worse down the road, they always leave," she said. "They're like, 'oh it's raining too much we'll have to go somewhere.' I don't have family here, I can't just go."

St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch and Councilwoman Brandi Gabbard are hosting an event on Tuesday to hear from residents about flooding challenges around the city.

That event is open to the public and will offer residents the chance to ask questions and share concerns they have about flooding in St. Pete.

That meeting will be from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. You can find out more by clicking here.
