Deputies respond to 'possible plane crash' in Crystal River

The FAA said only the pilot was on board.

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. — The Citrus County Sheriff's Office says it is investigating a possible plane crash Tuesday evening near Fort Island Trail Park in Crystal River.

In a preliminary report, the Federal Aviation Administration said a twin-engine Beechcraft B55 Baron crashed near Fort Island Trail Park around 5:45 p.m. Only the pilot was on board, according to the agency.

The extent of the pilot's injuries is not yet known.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash and will release updates as they become available.

Law enforcement officials and emergency personnel are at the scene. They are asking the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
