INVERNESS, Fla. — A 17-year-old woman faces a DUI manslaughter charge for a Friday night crash that killed a man on U.S. Highway 41, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers responded not long after 11:30 p.m. to the scene north of Zephyr Street where two cars had already crashed — and one started to catch fire. They say a pedestrian and a good Samaritan came to the aid of two drivers from Hernando who needed help.

But a car driven by Adison Lowdermilk from Inverness crested a hill on Florida Avenue and hit the pedestrian and one of the drivers before crashing into one of the cars already damaged from the earlier wreck, according to FHP.

The pedestrian, a 45-year-old woman from Inverness, was seriously hurt while one of the drivers, an 82-year-old man, died, troopers said. The second 75-year-old male driver also was seriously hurt.

Four people in their teens and early 20s from Inverness were in the car with Lowdermilk, troopers said, adding that they suffered minor injuries.

The 17-year-old was taken to an area hospital for treatment where she was found to be impaired, FHP said. She was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter thereafter.
