Widening of US 41 in Citrus County officially gets underway

A groundbreaking ceremony in Inverness marks the official beginning of a series of projects to widen the roadway.

INVERNESS, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation is officially breaking ground on its new series of projects to widen U.S. 41 in Citrus County. Officials from FDOT, the Board of County Commissioners and the city of Inverness will speak at the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday.

According to FDOT's website, the project will widen the stretch of U.S. 41 from West Main Street to south of the Withlacoochee State Trail bridge to a four-lane divided road with bike lanes and sidewalks. It will install new traffic signals at two major intersections, including the one at the Inverness Regional Shopping Center and upgrade traffic signals will be made at another.

Other improvements on the U.S. 41 project include:

  • Adding street lighting to all signalized intersections.
  • Pedestrian safety upgrades at intersections.
  • Add a dedicated left turn lane for the southbound traffic going to Inverness Middle School.
  • Provide a shared used path to connect sidewalks to the Withlacoochee State Trail (WST) at the north end of the project. The WST will not be impacted.

Construction on the project is estimated to cost $21.6 million with completion scheduled for summer 2025.
