3-year-old dies after drowning in St. Pete

In an update, authorities said the child passed away. While it appears to be an accident, an investigation into the drowning is ongoing.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 3-year-old has died after they were pulled from the water at a home over the weekend in St. Petersburg, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

The agency's investigation began around 6 p.m. Saturday when deputies responded to a home in the area of 71st Street North and Orkney Avenue North near the Bonnie Bay community. A 3-year-old child was taken to the hospital in critical condition as a result of drowning, the sheriff's office said.

On Sunday, authorities said the child was doing better and was "stable." However, in an update obtained Monday morning, the sheriff's office said the child had passed away.

Authorities did not immediately say what led to the drowning. The drowning appears to be an accident but an investigation is still ongoing, the sheriff's office said.
