CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio — A central Ohio brewery is holding a fundraiser to help support the family of a mother who died last week while trying to save her 6-year-old son.
The charity drive on July 22 at Loose Rail Brewing in Canal Winchester will raise money for 29-year-old Alexa Stakely's son. Organizers say 100% of sales during the event will be donated to a trust for the boy.
Stakely died on July 11 from injuries sustained while trying to stop someone from stealing her SUV while her son was sleeping in the backseat. Her son was not injured in the incident.
Police said Stakely was a single mother and worked a second job as a waitress to help support her son. She had finished her shift and was picking her son up from the babysitter’s house when the incident happened.
Stakely was a speech-language pathologist in the preschool program at Winchester Trail Elementary School. She had been doing the job for five years and was fondly known by her students as “Ms. Alexa.”
The school district said Stakely was a great mother and “made a difference in the lives of the students and families she worked with.”
The charity drive will have a banner for students and friends to sign and memorial journals for guests to share words of encouragement with the family.
