TAMPA, Fla. -- As Mayor Buckhorn and housing authority officials ceremoniously shoveled dirt for a new senior citizen housing development at Main and Rome, it was another signal that West Tampa is undergoing major change.
"The Renaissance at West Tampa" is the first of several major housing developments along the West River area that will make up a massive mixed-income community.
The new homes are replacing the outdated public housing units at North Boulevard Homes, which are currently under demolition.
Residents there were relocated over the last few years to other areas of the city but will be invited to return once the new developments are complete.
Tampa Housing Authority officials expect to break ground on two more developments by the end of 2018.
