The south part of the Bay area was hit hard too by heavy rain.
Hurricane Hermine made landfall overnight, but on Holmes Beach in Anna Maria Island it left its mark as early as Wednesday. Many roads are still flooded. Homeowners say it’s some of the worst flooding they’ve seen in years.
More than 10 inches of rain plus a higher than normal tidal surge was too much for the drains to handle. Ian Oleski said the relentless rain started on Wednesday and lasted about 12 hours.
“The road usually backs up but it just kept going. Eventually, we were trying to keep the water out, but they decided to worry about it later and spend the next day trying to get the water out,” said Oleski.
While sandbags protected some homes others were not as lucky some garages had several inches of water.
