ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The president and CEO of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital has resigned, along with multiple other high-ranking staff members, after a groundbreaking Tampa Bay Times investigation revealed warning signs were missed about problems in the hospital's heart surgery program.
On Tuesday, hospital officials said the events described in the investigation are unacceptable.
As a result, board leadership accepted the resignations of President Dr. Jonathan Ellen, Cardiovascular Surgery Division Chief Dr. Jeffrey Jacobs, Vice President and former Lead Risk Management Executive Jackie Crain and Surgery Department Chair Dr. Paul Colombani.
Johns Hopkins Health System President Kevin W. Sowers will temporarily lead the hospital as the search for new and interim leaders gets underway.
The board of Johns Hopkins Medicine will conduct a review of issues at the facility.
"We will share the lessons learned from that review to ensure that Johns Hopkins, Johns Hopkins All Children’s and other hospitals around the country can learn from and avoid the mistakes that were made," All Children's Hospital wrote in a statement.
