8 rescued from sinking boat off Anna Maria

The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued 8 people from a sinking boat 33 miles west of Anna Maria Island.

St. Petersburg, Florida – The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued 8 people from a sinking boat 33 miles west of Anna Maria Island.

Officials say at 1:55 p.m., an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew on a training flight, heard a mayday call via VHF-FM radio channel 16 from of a boat taking on water with six adults and two children aboard.

The crew immediately diverted and arrived on scene at 2:05 p.m., hoisted the people and transported them to the air station. There are no reported injuries.

The boat has reportedly sank and is marked as a hazard to navigation with a white strobe light.
