POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Three people were killed in separate crashes -- one a head-on collision -- within four hours on Wednesday, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The first crash happened about 5:52 a.m. on U.S. Highway 98 N. at Fox Lake Drive. Deputies said Julio Ramos-Bueno, 75, of Lakeland was trying to cross U.S. 98 in a dimly lit area when he was hit by a 2015 Ford Fusion driven by Alfonso Bustos-Ugalde of Eagle Lake.

Ramos-Bueno was then struck by a second vehicle. He died of his injuries.

Bustos-Ugalde was arrested for driving with an expired license. Deputies said the license expired in 2005.

No other criminal charges are expected, deputies said.

The second crash happened about 9:09 a.m. on Marigold Avenue near Fairway Road in Poinciana. A 2000 Toyota Camry driven by a 64-year-old Poinciana man was headed south on Marigold when for unknown reasons it crossed the center line.

The Toyota struck the front of a northbound 2003 Mazda Protege. The Mazda's driver, Madelyn Santiago, 54, of Poinciana, was killed.

The Toyota driver only suffered minor injuries.

Deputies said no criminal charges are expected.

In the third crash, deputies said about 9:31 a.m., Michael Kempe, 59, was either walking or riding a bicycle along U.S. Highway 27 near George Street in Frostproof.

Kempe was struck and by a northbound semi owned by the Colorado Box Beef Company in Lakeland. Deputies said the truck driver swerved and tried to avoid hitting Kempe.

The driver was released after speaking with deputies.
