TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida officials say payments will resume to the company blamed for a multitude of problems after a SunPass system upgrade went south.
The Florida Department of Transportation said Monday the maximum amount of penalties -- about $8.3 million -- has been issued against Conduent.
Under state law, FDOT said it has to "compensate Conduent for its monthly operations less any applicable penalties. With that, FDOT is imposing the maximum 25 percent penalty on all monthly payments to Conduent received to date for operation of the system since June 2018."

The required monthly payments to the troubled company will resume this month. It will also pay unpaid monthly invoices dating back to June 2018.
The SunPass issues started when the state chose not to run its old system in parallel with a new system. That meant when the new system wasn’t functioning properly, there was no working backup system to fall back upon.
That led to a major backup of toll transactions.
In March, Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered FDOT to suspend administrative fees and penalties until June 1.
Despite the suspension, some drivers received collection notices from the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority's vendor.
