Scam alert: Pinellas County deputies warn residents of a caller pretending to be lieutenant

Authorities say the caller is telling people that they have outstanding warrants because they missed a court date.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A scam warning has been issued after the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says someone is calling residents, referring to themselves as an employee with the agency.

In a news release issued Monday, deputies explain the suspected caller is referring to himself as "Lieutenant James Perry" and is telling people that they have outstanding warrants because they missed a court date.

The caller is reportedly blocking his number and asking residents to call (656) 650-1745.

The sheriff's office is also reminding locals that it will never call them to request money over the phone or ask for bank information to wire money.

"We advise citizens not to give personal information or account information over the phone and call the Sheriff's Office to report suspicious activity," the agency said in a release.

If you have any information on this recent phone scam, or if you've received a call yourself, you're asked to call the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office at (727) 582-6200.
