The man chosen for Palmetto police chief has been arrested and charged with DUI.
Deputy Chief Scott Tyler

Palmetto, Florida -- The City of Palmetto has a new police chief and the man the mayor is selecting has been arrested in the past. Two years ago, 10 Investigates found major problems with several in the department including Deputy Chief Scott Tyler.

In 2000, Tyler was arrested for DUI after an being involved in an accident.

Records show he left the scene, then came back and refused to take a breathalyzer test.

Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant refuses to believe her choice as chief did anything wrong.

When we said to her, "There are questions that are raised," Groover Bryant said, " I think in anybody's background you could find something that you could blow out of it of any type of perspective and I think these things have been cleared, they've been exonerated."

But, Tyler wasn't exonerated. He was found guilty of DUI. And now he will become chief of a department that has been full of controversy with its officers and how it operates.
