It was a big purchase that one Bay Area woman would have never thought would turn into a big problem.
Not only that, a potentially dangerous one.
“I purchased a TV in the summer of 2016,” says Kydani Dover of Tampa. “It was a Samsung J series. I had it for a couple of years.”
But Dover never thought that a television would do this.
“The television all a sudden just went black, and I tried to inspect the television and figure out what was wrong with it, and I noticed the frame of the tv was melting,” says Dover.
These are photos Kydani took right after.
She says all of a sudden, she smelled something funny. Then realized it smelt like something was burning. So she made a call.
‘‘Samsung said I was eligible for an exchange. They asked about the location of the tv, any damage to property or persons. They also instructed me to unplug the tv and to keep it unplugged,” says Dover.
Not once did they mention that this may had happened before.
But according to a quick search on saferproducts.gov, there are numerous reports in just the past couple of months of consumers complaining about the same thing.
Other internet searches bring up the same complaint.
We reached out to Samsung asking them about what’s going on. While they tell me there are no recalls on any of their smart TV’s, they sent this statement:
"We stand behind the quality and safety of our televisions. We have reached out to Ms. Dover and have resolved the matter to her satisfaction. Until we are able to thoroughly examine a unit, it is impossible to determine the cause of any incident. Any customer who has questions about a Samsung product should contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG."
If you have a product that you may have a problem with you can report it at saferproducts.gov.
