Heavy rain brings flooding to the Tampa Bay area

Drivers are being urged to use caution.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Persistent rain brought flooding Thursday morning to the Tampa Bay area, and the rain is expected to continue throughout the day.

10Weather Meteorologist Grant Gilmore said a stationary boundary will remain draped over northern Florida, keeping a stream of showers and storms moving from the Gulf into much of the Florida Peninsula. Gilmore said more widespread showers and thunderstorm activity would develop into the early afternoon.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has issued the following flood warnings:

  • Progress Boulevard (affecting 78th Street & Falkenburg Road)
  • Causeway Boulevard (in the area of 78th Street & Clifford Sample Drive)
  • Oakfield Drive/Eichenfeld Drive
  • The neighborhood on the NE corner of Causeway Boulevard/Hwy 301 is under water

Drivers should use caution on the roads this week. It's always better to avoid flooding because you don't know how deep the floodwater might be.

Flooding has already been reported in parts of St. Petersburg and Tampa. Scroll down to see the photos captured by two of our 10News photojournalists in the area. If you have photos, we encourage you to send them through the 10News Facebook page.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said a young driver was going north over a bridge on Sheldon Road when the driver lost control Thursday and drove up "on top of the wall." Deputies say the driver slid "the entire distance" before stopping at the opposite end of the bridge.

The metal railing was damaged but most likely prevented him from going over into the canal, according to law enforcement.
