TAMPA, Fla. — To help fight the spread of coronavirus, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister announced Thursday morning that 164 low-level, non-violent inmates would be released from jail and sent back into the Tampa Bay area.
It's important to note: There are no confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, at the jail. The move is precautionary.
10Investigates looked into the data and found there are actually 163 inmates being released. Either way, who are these people? We found out what they are accused of doing.
"These defendants are the lowest public safety risk," Chronister said. "They were merely sitting in jail because they could not afford to pay the amount it would take to bond out."
Despite the sheriff's reassurance, some people have voiced concerns. So, 10Investigated requested the names and charges for these individuals.
We found most of the charges for these inmates are possession, petit theft and trespassing.
There were a few outliers, like prostitution and delivery of a controlled substance. There was also one case of domestic violence. That case, however, was reduced from a felony.
Chronister said the inmates will still need to face the charges.
"As your sheriff, there is nothing I take more seriously than public safety and protecting our community," Chronister said.
