St. Petersburg, Florida - Bob Austin, the husband of Former 10 News anchor Marty Matthews, has been released from the hospital after being involved in a serious car crash that claimed the life of their daughter.

Bob was seriously injured in the crash that happened on Christmas Eve around 12:20 p.m. on Interstate 95 in Colleton County, South Carolina. Matthews tells 10 News that her husband lost a lot of blood, suffered from several broken ribs and his lungs were punctured but now he is home recovering.

Marty says, "He is in stable condition but has months of healing ahead especially since he is dealing with overwhelming grief." She says that a private family funeral will be held for their daughter Emily when Bob is well enough.

Authorities say Bob, was driving a Cadillac SUV when he ran off the left side of the road after losing control in the rain, and smashed into some trees. The couple's 28-year-old daughter was trapped in the back seat. She died at the scene from injuries she suffered in the crash.

Marty was in the front-seat and was not hurt. All three were wearing their seat belts at the time.

Emily was traveling with her parents to her brother's home in North Carolina when the crash happened. She worked as an Associate Media Director in Los Angeles, California.

Marty Matthews co-anchored 10 News' Life Around the Bay show for several years, after it started in 2002. She won numerous awards for her dedication and commitment to WTSP's Wednesday's Child segments which featured foster children in need of a forever home.

Matthews says, "Emily always wanted to know about Wednesday's Child and was so happy when children were adopted. She said when she married she would adopt a child since there were so many kids in need out there."

In Emily's honor her employer has set up a special fund in her honor. You can donate to "The Emily Austin Project." It's a special charity designed to help people in need, especially homeless families and children." Matthews says helping people in need was Emily's passion.

Marty Matthews spent more than 15 years at 10 News.
