LAND O' LAKES, Fla. — An inmate in the Land O' Lakes Detention Center was arrested after deputies say he tried to smuggle meth into the facility on a postcard.

Jail staff talked to Ronald Alan Smith, 34, and saw him chewing on the postcard in his mouth, according to the arrest affidavit.

Smith gave multiple reasons why he had the postcard and denied that it was mailed to him by anyone, the affidavit adds. Pasco County deputies say he later admitted someone mailed him the postcard and it was addressed to him, but he denied that it belonged to him.

Smith said another inmate asked him if the postcard could be mailed with the drug "speed," the affidavit states. He said he agreed to have the postcard mailed, but only if he could have half, according to the affidavit.

Deputies say Smith admitted that he allowed the illegal drug to be mailed and knowingly introduced it into the facility and took it to get high.

The postcard was sent to FDLE to be tested, according to the affidavit, where it tested positive for methamphetamine.

Smith faces charges for having contraband in the detention facility and possession of meth. He remains in custody at the jail.
