Florida firm sues American Spirit cigarettes

The plaintiffs say the company uses terms like "Natural" intended to suggest that American Spirits are healthier, safer and present a lower risk of disease.
The plaintiff’s claim these terms violates federal law and is deceptive. SFNTC and Reynolds American have yet to respond.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) – The Santa Fe company behind a line of cigarettes touted as natural is being targeted in a class-action lawsuit.

Schlesinger Law Offices, P.A., a Florida based law firm, filed the lawsuit this week against the maker of American Spirit cigarettes, Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company (SFNTC) and its parent company Reynolds American.

The plaintiffs say the cigarette maker's marketing uses terms like "Natural," "Additive Free," "100% Additive Free," "Organic," and an "unadulterated tobacco product" intended to suggest that American Spirits are healthier, safer and present a lower risk of tobacco related disease than other tobacco products.

The plaintiff's claim these terms violates federal law and is deceptive. SFNTC and Reynolds American have yet to respond.
