Tampa school holds 'socially distant' graduation for seniors

Over the course of two days, Carrollwood Day School held graduation ceremonies for each of their 80, 2020 seniors.

TAMPA, Fla. — Over the course of two days, Carrollwood Day School held graduation ceremonies for each of their 80, 2020 seniors.

They went in groups of no more than six.

When they arrived to the school, they were directed to a private dressing room with their family.

Then, staying at least six feet apart, they each walked across the stage in the auditorium.

They stopped in the middle of the stage and picked up their diploma and posed for a picture.

There were no handshakes but there was a lot of clapping.

Head of the Carrollwood Days School, Dr. Ryan Kelly says, “I really felt like we had to do something like this.”

He says his team came up with the social distance, but in person plan.  He says, “COVID-19 wreaked havoc across the world, and we wanted to give them a slice of normalcy.”  He adds, “We care about them. We wanted to make sure no matter what’s going on in the world, they’re celebrated and get that in person experience.”

The school also had a professional photography team there that took video and pictures.

The plan is to mesh it altogether into one video that will be sent via YouTube for seniors to watch.

Kelly explains, "And what we are doing through the magic of technology, is putting it all together. Splicing it so basically it is a continuous graduation.  So it will look and feel like on TV that they are in a real graduation with all of their classmates even though we’ve done it over the course of two days.”
