Tampa offering over 300 students availability to join free after school program

The program is offered at 24 recreation and community centers across Tampa. The city says over 1,200 children ages 5-12 are already registered.

TAMPA, Fla. — School is back for students in the Tampa Bay area, and the city of Tampa is ensuring the fun keeps going after the bell rings.

Leaders announced the city's Parks and Recreation Department's free after school program has availability for more than 300 students.

The program is offered at 24 recreation and community centers across Tampa. The city says over 1,200 children ages 5-12 are already registered.

"The After School Program is a fantastic free resource for all families," Parks and Recreation Manager Regina McBride Smith said in a statement. "Each student will need a Rec Card, which is $15 a year per student."

Tampa's after-school program offers students homework assistance, computer labs with Wi-Fi access, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor activities and sports.

Leaders say some centers have programming for teens ages 13-17, but parents should call the centers to ask about availability. Teen rec cards are free for those who participate.

"We know how difficult it can be to find high-quality, affordable after school programs," the city wrote on its website. "The goal of our program is for youth to grow physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually by playing, exploring and learning with others in a fun, safe, healthy environment."
