It’s our favorite part of the week!
Friday leads us into the weekend, but it’s also when we showcase our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida. This week we spent time on the campus of Bayonet Point Middle School in Pasco County.
Congratulations Patriots! Combine a strong STEM program with choice in learning and you get STEM-LACTIC which is a core component of Bayonet Point Middle School. LACTIC means students take a large responsibility in their education, but also make choices based on the best way they learn.
To encourage more females to pursue careers in the STEM field, next year the school will offer a program unique to the district. #STEMAZING will help develop STEM skills for female students and bring in current females working in the STEM field to inspire and encourage this generation.
It’s not just STEM, the faculty coordinate with each other to offer interdisciplinary projects to the students. For example, in one class students learned how computers are constructed, by taking them apart. Those computer pieces were then used in the art class to create art projects. One group of students studied homelessness.
In the social science class, they researched the social aspect, but then in math developed a meal plan to feed 30-40 people. This is an immersive way of learning for the students.
The lessons are referred to as Authentic Learning Units. In a lesson on Land, Sea and Air robots were used for the land portion, drones for air and an underwater robot for the sea.
If you have a recommendation for 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida, email us the name of the school and tell us why they should be featured to 10schools@wtsp.com. We’re looking for elementary, middle and high schools.
