We’re happy to announce Ponce de Leon Elementary in Pinellas County as our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
This school found some exciting ways to engage its students and infuse technology into their learning. Walking the campus you will find several science sight words along fences and walls.
While it reinforces the science vocabulary, the words are also used in an iPad scavenger hunt. Students answer questions on the iPad by snapping photos of the vocabulary word on the campus they think is the answer.
As it is happening in real time, the teacher can respond to them if the answer is correct or not. They’re learning science, technology and getting a little bit of exercise in (as they run around to the different areas).
You’ve probably heard of Kahootz or seen us feature it here on 10News, but they do it a little different at Ponce. Students will play Kahootz in the cafeteria as they eat lunch. If you’ve even been in an elementary school cafeteria during lunchtime, you know how much energy is being burned off by the kids.
As soon as the game started, it had their full attention and they were engaged. Plus they were learning!
We even saw them using laptops to draw in art class! The school also participates in the district’s Beyond the Classroom program where students can check out computers for home use if they don’t have access to one outside of school.
Beyond technology, they also offer Promise Time Extended Learning which is small group tutoring in reading and math for those who need a little extra help. They have a Science Lab where students in grades 3, 4, 5 go for hands-on learning every four weeks.
New this year is the Pawsitive Panther Post. It’s a school store where students purchase items with “money” they earned for good behavior or achievement. With all this happening on one campus, it’s easy to see why they are the 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
