Here's how Pinellas County students are going to make up time lost after recent hurricanes

The Pinellas County School Board held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss changes to the school calendar.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Pinellas County students lost 46.5 hours of instructional time due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, and now, the district has approved a proposal on how to make up some of that time.

The school board met on Tuesday to discuss the finalized changes, which are outlined below:

School Calendar

  • School will be in session on Jan. 6, which was a previously designated hurricane makeup day.
  • School will be in session on Feb. 17 which was previously a "non-student day."
  • The last day of school, May 29, will change from an early release day to a full day of instruction.
  • High school graduations will occur at the end of May.

Exams and instructional time

  • The school board agreed to waive Semester 1 exams for high school and middle school. This would now add four days of instructional time back to the calendar.
    • Since this was approved, Semester 1-grade calculations would change (Q1 letter grade + Q2 letter grade/2)
