TAMPA, Fla. – School is out, but the hunt for qualified school bus drivers in Hillsborough County is still on.
Spokeswoman Tanya Arja said the district needs to hire 100 drivers and fill around 10 mechanic vacancies. Most of those openings were left open by retired employees.
The hiring spree comes about a month after the union representing drivers reached a deal with the district. The two sides had been unsuccessful in negotiating contracts for employees for the 2017-2018 school year.
Officials with the Hillsborough School Employees Federation, which represents bus drivers, said close to 75 percent of its employees earn salaries below the poverty level. HSEF said its goal is to make sure all employees are able to earn a living wage.
