TAMPA, Fla. (WTSP) -- The Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida could soon have an additional $22.5 million to help with relocating and building a new school in downtown Tampa.

State lawmakers approved the funds on Sunday as part of the education construction budget.

A report by USF calls the relocation to Channelside necessary so students and faculty can be within close proximity to Tampa General Hospital, which is the school's teaching hospital.

It also says the MCOM Building Facility Condition Index is rated as "poor," and needs to be replaced to keep up with modern technology for training.

The budget still must be approved by Governor Scott.

Relocating the medical school is expected to have a multi-million dollar economic impact on Channelside and downtown Tampa.
