It’s Friday, so you know it’s that time of the week where we recognize a different school in Tampa Bay as 10News’ School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida. This isn’t just a pep rally, we are headed into the classrooms to showcase the great achievements of the students, faculty and staff. Every Friday we are live from the school campus beginning at 6 a.m. and don’t forget to watch at 6 p.m. as well to catch the highlights from earlier in the day.

We’re happy to announce that our school this week is John Hopkins Middle School Center for International Studies in the Arts and Multimedia Journalism in Pinellas County. Congratulations Trojans! The J-Hop family has a lot to be proud about. For example, their multimedia program trains their students in print, online and broadcast journalism. Their paper, the J. Hop Times has been a finalist several times for the National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker award and has actually won the past two years. This recognition is similar to a newspaper winning the Pulitzer Prize for students. The paper is a finalist again this year and winners will be announced November 12. Of the 50 finalists this year, there are only three middles school programs, the rest are high schools. Journalism is just one side of it, John Hopkins also offers students the opportunity to enroll in a multitude of arts programs. The school offers classes in dance, orchestra, band, chorus, visual arts, drama and steel drums. In fact, John Hopkins is home to the only middle school steel drum program and only middle school professional theater in Pinellas County. National, state and district award winning art students attend John Hopkins Middle School, they are an American Ballet Theater affiliate, and their band, chorus and orchestra receive consistent high ratings. With all the great opportunities students have at John Hopkins Middle School Center for International Studies in the Arts and Multimedia Journalism, it’s easy to see why they are 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
