Hillsborough County woman accused of wrong-way driving on I-75 facing DUI charges

FHP says the driver blew a 0.204 BAC, which is more than double the legal limit, according to an arrest report.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A Hillsborough County woman is facing charges after Florida Highway Patrol says she was driving on the wrong side of the road while intoxicated.

In an arrest report, FHP says just before 2 a.m. on Monday a trooper was located on I-75 South at Mile Marker 256 where construction crews were working.

The trooper explains he was notified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) of a wrong-way driver going northbound in southbound lanes of I-75 coming towards the work zone.

After heading south, the trooper found an SUV approaching his patrol car head-on, FHP says.

After activating his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop, the driver, 27-year-old Luz Munoz Banuelos, reportedly tried moving her vehicle around the patrol car.

Munoz Banuelos then stopped her car due to oncoming traffic before the trooper notified her to pull over onto the shoulder, the arrest report reads. She then began to flee again, and the FHP officer began a pursuit.

The agency says the trooper performed a successful PIT maneuver and then stopped Munoz Banuelos on I-75 southbound.

When asked why she was driving on the wrong side of the road, she reportedly responded saying she "was just following her GPS."

FHP says Munoz Banuelos showed signs of impairment; including bloodshot, water and glassy eyes along with a strong odor of alcohol coming from her breath.

After agreeing to perform a sobriety test, officials reported both of Munoz Banuelos' breath samples came back with a 0.204 BAC, which is more than double the legal limit.

Munoz Banuelos was placed under arrest and is facing charges of fleeing to elude and DUI.
