TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa police arrested two people, including a teen, in connection to a man who was attacked last week while at a club in Ybor City.
On Friday, two people – 34-year-old Zachary Benton and a 15-year-old boy – reportedly turned themselves in to the police department. They were both wanted for felony battery, police explain in a news release.
The alleged attack happened just after 1 a.m. Monday, police said in a statement. The nightclub's website shows rapper Nardo Wick took the stage just hours before.
Police say a man tried to approach the performer for a photo after the concert had ended, however, Benton punched the man unprovoked. The teen then reportedly ran over and "punched the [man] several more times," the agency explains.
The man was immediately taken to a hospital outside of Hillsborough County where the report was later made, Tampa police said.
Benton is charged with felony battery in connection to the incident while the teen is facing charges of felony battery and minor in possession of a firearm while wearing a mask.
"Thanks to videos submitted and anonymous tips provided, detectives were able to positively identify the suspects involved and issue an arrest warrant," the agency said in a statement.
The victim has been identified by his family as 20-year-old George Obergon. His mother, Michelle Obergon, spoke with 10 Tampa Bay outside the hospital where he is recovering on Tuesday.
"To say my son is in this situation for a simple selfie is just mind-blowing," Michelle Obergon said. Michelle Obergon said her son is now recovering from a serious concussion and brain bleeding, but he's conscious.
"We cannot say with a brain injury where he can be in a week, two weeks, a year, five years. The brain has to heal on its own," she continued.
