RUSKIN, Fla. — A 13-year-old Hillsborough County middle school student is charged after bringing a weapon to campus, deputies say.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says a deputy received a tip at around 8 a.m. Monday that a student at Beth Shields Middle School was "spark testing" a taser at a bus stop.

Investigators say they later found a taser in the 13-year-old's purse.

Deputies later learned the student borrowed the taser from a relative and brought it because they had a problem with a fellow student.

The 13-year-old is facing one charge of possession of a weapon on school property. 10 Tampa Bay is not identifying the student due to their age.

"It is unacceptable that someone would bring a weapon to school to terrorize another student," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "Thanks to the quick actions of our School Resource deputy, we were able to prevent a potentially dangerous situation. Let me be clear: we will pursue every tip and do whatever it takes to keep our schools safe."
