RIVERVIEW, Fla. — A Riverview woman was arrested after authorities say she made online death threats to Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement alerted them about "threatening messages" received by the governor's office on its website.
The messenger, who identified herself as 20-year-old Danyele Callaway, requested to meet with DeSantis in person while including life-threatening statements, officials say.
This reportedly concerned the office's staff, who then notified law enforcement of this situation.
Around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, deputies with HCSO's Behavioral Resource Unit say they went to Callaway's home to do a mental health evaluation and assess potential threats posed by her online statements.
Investigators say they also learned she has a history of interactions with law enforcement, including arrests for domestic violence-related charges and battery on public servants. They also explain she's previously made verbal threats to DeSantis, expressing anti-government and anti-law enforcement views.
"The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will not tolerate any threats, especially from individuals who think they can hide behind their keyboards to spread fear and harm. We will not accept a threat against anyone in our community, especially our Governor. Threatening the lives of those who serve our democratic institutions is an attack on the very principles of our society and justice system," said Sheriff Chad Chronister in a statement. "While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, no one has the right to endanger others' lives.
"This case is a stark reminder that violent threats will not be tolerated. We will continue to pursue and hold accountable anyone who seeks to disrupt the peace and safety of our community."
Callaway was charged with one count of written or electronic threat to kill or inflict bodily injury.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
