Remains of missing Florida man found after two years

Forensic experts have been searching the woods behind Flagler Estates for months. They have identified bones they found as belonging to Carlos Tavarez.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two years after he went missing, the remains of Carlos Tavarez have been recovered and identified.

He was last seen near Faith Street in Flagler Estates in the summer of 2022.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said all tips led to dead ends until February 8 of this year, when someone called them and reported skeletal remains in the woods behind Flagler Estates.

First Coast News reported at the time human bones had been found in the area and forensics units were on site.

The bones were sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, where SJCSO says they were identified as Tavarez.

They do not yet know his cause of death.

When First Coast News spoke with his mother, Debbra Terrrel, in October 2022, she told us it was so unusual for her to not hear from him that she believed her son must be in a situation where he could not get in contact with her, or dead.

In their release announcing Tavarez had been found, SJCSO quoted Terrell saying: “He was just a good hearted guy and he loved his family, he loved being with us. I believe there’s several people out there in Flagler Estates that knows exactly what happened and I just pray that someone will come and say something, tell someone, and pray that we find the person that actually really done this to Carlos."
