Polk County deputy charged with DUI while on duty

The 27-year-old deputy reportedly admitted to drinking "about three coffee mugs of whiskey" the night before.

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Polk County deputy was arrested for DUI after coming into work intoxicated, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities said 27-year-old Joseph Everett showed up for duty on the morning of June 22 when his supervisor noticed an odor of alcohol on his breath.

The deputy underwent a standardized field sobriety test and "exhibited numerous signs of obvious impairment," the sheriff's office said.

According to authorities, Everett admitted to drinking "about three coffee mugs of whiskey" on Friday night.

Everett reportedly cooperated with the investigation and was taken to the sheriff's processing center where he was charged with DUI.

The deputy, who had been with the sheriff's office for two years, resigned upon his arrest.

“Anytime someone chooses to drive under the influence of alcohol, it shows a lack of good [judgment.] If you lack the proper [judgment] when it comes to drinking and driving, you have no business working in law enforcement. We hold our deputies to a higher standard than the community, and he failed to meet that standard," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement.
