Lakeland man arrested for shooting husband to death, police say

Authorities said the man shot the entire magazine of bullets.

LAKELAND, Fla. — A Lakeland man was arrested after he called 911 and said he shot his husband, authorities said.

Gavin Miranda, 27, said he and his husband Hugo Gomez, 30, got into a fight Thursday night at their apartment on Village Center Drive in Lakeland, according to a police department news release.

Things escalated when Miranda said Gomez choked him against the wall, and Miranda went for a gun and shot him multiple times, according to the arrest affidavit.

Miranda shot the entire magazine of bullets into his husband, Lakeland police said. Miranda told the 911 operator the two were having marital issues, but this was the first time the fighting turned physical.

When police arrived at the house, they found Gomez lying on the floor face down with 11 gunshot wounds, the affidavit reads. The Lakeland Fire Department and Polk County Fire Rescue pronounced Gomez dead at the scene, according to a news release.

Police said the gunshot wounds indicate Gomez was lying face down on the floor and "clearly defenseless" since nine of the wounds were to his back. When police executed a search warrant on the apartment, they found a 9mm handgun, 14 shell castings and nine projectile bullets.

Miranda is being charged with first-degree murder, which is a capital felony.

Neither of the men had a criminal background.
