Man dies on flight after swallowing 246 packets of cocaine

Authorities say swallowing drugs is a common tactic used by smugglers.

A Japanese man died of an overdose on a flight from Mexico City to Tokyo with 246 plastic packets of cocaine in his stomach, CNN reports.

According to The Guardian, the plane made an emergency landing in Hermosillo, Sonora after the 42-year-old man began convulsing on May 24. Paramedics found the man dead. His body was removed, and the Aeroméxico plane continued on to Japan with 198 passengers aboard, The Guardian says.

During an autopsy, the 1 by 2.5-centimeter packages were found in his stomach and intestines, according to CNN. Smugglers often swallow wrapped-up drugs to move them between countries, CNN said.
