St. Petersburg man dead in 'accidental' shooting with roommmate, deputies say

The Pinellas County Sheriff's office says one roommate was showing the other different guns he owns, while also drinking alcohol.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A St. Petersburg man is dead after deputies say he was "accidentally" shot in the chest by his roommate.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says officials responded to reports of a man shot just before 5 p.m. Sunday in the area of 49th Avenue North and Park Street North.

When authorities arrived at the home, they said 50-year-old Kevin Bishop was lying on the floor inside with a gunshot wound to his chest.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Investigators explain that Bishop was drinking alcohol during the day with his roommate, 57-year-old William Tompkins.

Bishop was reportedly showing Tompkins different guns he owns and told his roommate that all of them were unloaded.

Detectives say both men were pointing the weapons at each other and pulling the triggers, with none of them initially firing.

Bishop eventually grabbed a Glock 21 from Tompkins, causing him to release his fingers from the gun and shoot Bishop in the chest accidentally, the sheriff's office says.

Tompkins reportedly left the home and called 911, but he was on scene when deputies arrived.

The investigation into this shooting is ongoing.
