Man avoids jail time in dog's death

A Pasco man convicted of killing his own dog with his bare hands won't serve jail time.
Brian Perry is escorted out of the courtroom after receiving his sentence Friday.

New Port Richey, Florida -- A Pasco man convicted of killing his own dog with his bare hands won't serve any jail time.

"This is a man who was intoxicated, was angry, beat your dog to death, hid the body and came up with a duplicitous story," the judge said at Brian Perry's sentencing hearing Friday.

Perry faced charges of cruelty to animals and obstruction of justice. He only had his German Shepherd/Rottweiller mix, Gipper, for about two weeks before police say he beat his dog to death with his bare hands.

In the end, the judge only sentence Perry to community service at an animal shelter. He is also not allowed to own any animals, except for the two dogs he already has.

About 25 members of the Justice for Gipper group were at the courtroom today wearing white shirts in his memory.
