Man accused of causing deadly crash on Skyway Bridge faces additional charges

Troopers say they were called to assist the sheriff's office in trying to stop Roman, who was allegedly driving a stolen Ford Mustang.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 22-year-old man who's been accused of causing a deadly crash Wednesday on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is facing more charges.

A rideshare driver and one of his passengers were killed after Leosvany Roman drove the wrong way on the interstate and collided head-on with the van, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

He faces the following charges:

  • Aggravated assault on law enforcement officer with deadly weapon
  • Burglary of an unoccupied conveyance
  • Resisting officer without violence
  • Grand theft motor vehicle
  • Reckless driving with property damage or personal injury
  • Feeling to elude highspeed
  • Driving with a license canceled, suspended or revoked

Previously, Roman was already facing charges of felony murder, vehicular homicide, aggravated fleeing and eluding involving death, driving while license suspended involving death and battery on a law enforcement officer.

It all started just before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hillsborough County, the sheriff's office said in an updated news release.

Troopers say they were called to assist the sheriff's office in trying to stop Roman who was driving a stolen Ford Mustang.

The 22-year-old, who's from Hialeah, Florida, parked in front of a business located on West Coumbus Drive in Tampa as deputies tried to approach him. However, authorities say he started the car and rammed into two sheriff's office cars.

Roman reportedly then sped away southbound on I-275.

An FHP trooper tried to stop Roman when they reached the bridge, but Roman hit the trooper's car, continued southbound to the top of the bridge, then turned around and rammed the trooper's car again before speeding the wrong way back down the southbound lanes.

As Roman continued speeding down I-275, the stolen Mustang he was driving collided head-on with a rideshare near the northern rest area, according to FHP.

The rideshare driver, a 33-year-old from Bradenton, died as a result. Two of his three passengers, a 52-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, also died in the crash. The other passenger, a 24-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

Deputies say Roman's accomplice, who has been identified as 30-year-old Mohammed Pujol, was arrested and faces multiple charges including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and resisting officer without violence.

Pujol was reportedly parked in a sedan next to the Mustang with Roman in it in front of the business. He turned on his car and drove toward a deputy who was able to jump out of the way.

"Tampa Police Officers assisted by attempting a traffic stop and ultimately used stop sticks on the 3300 block of North Nebraska Avenue and arrested Pujol," the news release reads.

All three rideshare passengers were from Columbiana, Ohio, FHP said.

Roman also suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital, as well.

The trooper Roman rammed into, a 27-year-old who's been with the FHP for two years, had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Editor's note: The Florida Highway Patrol earlier said the rideshare driver was working with Uber. In a statement, Uber said this crash "does not appear to be connected to the Uber platform. We do not have any trips that align with the details."
