TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy is accused of bringing an airsoft gun to his high school Friday morning in Florida and shooting his classmate with it.
The student was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on campus.
At around 8 a.m., staff at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee saw a student who appeared to be in distress and told the staff that they had been shot with an airsoft gun, the Leon County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.
Officials quickly investigated the incident and determined the 16-year-old was the one who shot the student, deputies say.
A search was reportedly conducted in the boy's car and authorities found the airsoft rifle in the back seat.
The teen confessed to officials that he shot the student with the airsoft gun. He was then arrested by the school's resource deputy and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
"Parents and guardians are urged to have open and candid discussions with their children regarding the importance of adhering to the district's zero tolerance policy for weapons on campus," the sheriff's office wrote in the Facebook post. "Ensuring that students understand the gravity of this matter and the potential consequences is vital in maintaining a safe and secure school environment."
The sheriff's office says that any students who see suspicious activity at any school in Leon County can call 850-922-KIDS to report it.
