JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville contract postal worker pleaded guilty to federal charges after investigators say he stole mail and used stolen credit cards to buy merchandise, according to a release from the Department of Justice.
Daniel Diaz Garcia, 35, pleaded guilty to credit card fraud and mail theft, the DOJ announced Thursday.
Court documents show Garcia started work as a highway contract carrier in September 2023, handling First-Class Mail delivery in Jacksonville.
The U.S. Postal Service - Office of Inspector General (USPS-OIG) determined that Garcia would steal mail, open it and steal the contents inside, including credit cards.
Investigators ultimately found that Garcia was stealing credit cards from multiple victims along his mail route.
The release states that video surveillance from several businesses captured Garcia using stolen credit cards to buy more than $1,000 in merchandise.
When Garcia was taken in for questioning by law enforcement, they found another stolen credit card in his wallet, according to the release.
Garcia was arrested on July 29, 2024, by the USPS OIG. He faces up to 10 years in federal prison for the credit card fraud offense, and up to 5 years in prison for the mail theft offense.
Garcia was required to pay restitution to all the victims he stole from.
His sentencing date has not yet been set.
