Man shoots, injures Hillsborough County deputy while being tased, sheriff's office says

The deputy was not critically injured.

TAMPA, Fla. — A man shot and injured a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy in a park Sunday morning, authorities said.

Deputies were patrolling the Beacon Meadows Park area just before 10 a.m. when they encountered a man, identified as Anthony Carpenter, who was trespassing in the park the day before. After they asked him to leave for more than 20 minutes, deputies tased him, according to a news release.

While the suspect was on the ground, he shot at deputies three times, hitting one.

The deputy was shot and the bullet hit his shoulder microphone, officials said. He is not critically injured and is recovering.

At a news conference, Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer said the suspect, who is homeless, is known to spend a lot of time at the park with an "aggressive dog."

"This violence towards our deputies is an absolutely no-go," Maurer said.

State Attorney Susan Lopez was also at the news conference and said the suspect would be charged with three counts of first-degree murder with a firearm, armed trespassing and resisting an officer with violence.

"We take these charges very seriously," she said. "This was, in fact, a Sunday morning miracle."
