State attorney: 2 men followed couple out of Hard Rock Casino, shot them in robbery

The couple was followed out of the casino after winning thousands on the slot machines, the state attorney's office said.

TAMPA, Fla. — What started as a date night at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa ended with the couple getting shot outside their home.

Kim Chambliss and Valery Delacruz were at the casino on Aug. 2 when Delacruz won around $3,300 on the slot machines, according to a motion from the state attorney's office. They left the casino around 4 a.m. with a large sum of cash from their winnings.

"We know that the victims were not being shy about the fact that they won money and that Delacruz had a large amount of cash that he was pulling out of his pockets on display," an investigator said at a hearing for one of the suspects on Thursday.

State Attorney Suzy Lopez said two men, identified as Marcus Jenkins and Tristin Wright, were seen following the couple out of the casino and driving behind their car.

When Chambliss and Delacruz arrived at their home on Valhalla Woods Drive in Riverview, Jenkins and another unidentified suspect approached the couple holding semi-automatic pistols, the state attorney's office said.

"They're sitting in their car for a short period of time just talking about the night and a single shot comes through the passenger side of the vehicle. And two men with their faces covered come and rob them at gunpoint," the investigator said.

The incident was captured on the home's Ring doorbell camera.

According to the motion, Jenkins is seen on video discharging his firearm four times toward Delacruz as he exited the front passenger side of the car and lay on the ground.

Delacruz can reportedly be heard shouting, "I don't have no money," before Jenkins ordered him to take his watch off. Chambliss' purse, which contained her debit card and driver's license was also stolen.

"Valery Delacruz suffered a gunshot wound to his right thigh, which went through and through, and a gunshot wound to his left knee which ricocheted into his thigh. Kim Chambliss suffered a single gunshot wound to the back of her right calf," the document reads.

The couple was transported to Tampa General Hospital for treatment.

A silver Hyundai Sonata with "a distinct black top" was seen fleeing the neighborhood on a neighbor's doorbell camera.

Lopez said Jenkins and another suspect shot the couple while Wright "waited in the car as this took place and drove [Jenkins] after the shooting."

Jenkins is facing several charges, including attempted first-degree murder. Wright is also facing several charges, including robbery and principal to attempted murder.

Detectives are still working to identify the third suspect.
