Deputies: Tampa high school custodian brought gun to campus

At the time of his arrest, 58-year-old Michael Difabio resigned from King High School, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

TAMPA, Fla. — A former Tampa high school custodian was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly brought a gun to campus, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Former King High School custodian Michael Difabio, 58,  is reportedly facing one count of possession of a firearm on school grounds. Deputies responded to the school around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday after administrators said a gun was found in a maintenance closet, according to the sheriff's office.

Difabio had been working at King High School since January 2023, deputies said. At the time of his arrest, he reportedly resigned from the school.

"There is no place for weapons on school grounds. Schools should be sanctuaries where students and staff should feel safe and secure," Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister stated in a news release"The first day of school is just around the corner, and our message is loud and clear, we will not tolerate weapons on campus for any reason."

The sheriff's office says the investigation remains active and that more updates will come from the Public Affairs Office.
